North East India’s population has surpassed 40 million and continues to grow rapidly. The resulting demographic pressure and urbanization pose serious challenges to food and nutritional security, environmental safety, and employment, placing immense strain on diminishing natural resources and threatening the very resource base. Agricultural development in the region is hampered by inadequate infrastructure, low productivity, weak market linkages, and limited access to modern farming techniques. Given that over 80% of the population depends on agriculture, higher education in the field could be a catalyst for overall development. It can serve as both a driver and an outcome of problem-focused research and development, with post-graduate education empowering young minds to become the researchers who will drive sustained growth.

It was with this vision that the College of Post Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences (formerly known as the College of Post-Graduate Studies), a constituent college of the Central Agricultural University, Imphal (CAU-I), was established in 2007 at Umiam, Meghalayain 16.0 acares of land. The college was founded with the sole objective of training post-graduate students in agriculture from the North Eastern Hill states. These students are expected to become torchbearers for enhancing agricultural growth and providing livelihood support to the farming and rural communities across the region.
